ORIGINS

  • Officially began in 1890
  • The first paid coach, Frank Crawford, arrived in 1893
  • Nebraska's first out-of-state opponent, Iowa, was in 1891

GEORGE FLIPPIN

  • He was the first African American player
  • Missouri refused to play Nebraska

TEAM NAMES

  • Tree-planters
  • Rattlesnake Boys
  • Antelopes
  • Old Gold Knights
  • Bugeaters

CORNHUSKERS

  • According to Nebraska Athletics:
  • They were first called cornhuskers in 1899
  • Name was given by a sports editor

COACH WALTER C. BOOTH

  • Coached from 1900-1905
  • Compiled a 46-8-1 record
  • 24-game winning streak
  • 24-game streak was state record
  • Until victory against Florida in 1955

COACH EWALD O. STIEHM

  • Hired in 1911
  • 35-2-3 in five seasons
  • First All-America Players:
  • Vince Halligan and Guy Chamberlin
  • Stiehm left after 1915 season

MEMORIAL STADIUM

  • The Huskers website states:
  • Played first game there on Oct. 13, 1923
  • Becomes 3rd largest city when full
  • Continuing record of home sellouts
  • Construction to expand East Stadium 2011

ROSE BOWL GAME 1941

  • First bowl game
  • 24 hour celebration
  • University classes cancelled
  • Students stormed the capital
  • Demanded gov. to sing school song

1950 TEAM

  • Coached by Bill Glassford
  • Bobby Reynolds: Grand Island
  • Rushed 1,342 yards, 157 points
  • DataOmaha states that:
  • No. 45 of NE's greatest athletes

1960 SEASON

  • Defeated 4th ranked UT

1969

  • Offense redesigned
  • Tom Osborne was assistant
  • Began record of 9-win seasons
  • Won 7 final games
  • 32 games unbeaten until 1972

1971 TEAM

  • Began No. 2 & ended No. 1
  • Defeated OK Thanksgiving
  • "Game of the Century"
  • Defeated AL in Orange Bowl
  • Among best in college football

COACH OSBORNE

  • Success continued
  • Won or shared 13 conference champs.
  • Won national champs. in 1994,95,97
  • 25th coach
  • Coached for 25 years

1994

  • 3 different QBs starting
  • Frazier, Berringer, Turman
  • First Nat. Champ. in 23 seasons

1995

  • Back-back Nat. Champs
  • Played No. 2 Florida
  • Orange Bowl

1997

  • Returned to Big 12 playoff
  • Beat TN in Orange Bowl
  • Dec. 10: Osbourne retired
  • 255-49-3 under Osbourne

COACH FRANK SOLICH

  • First team won 9 games
  • Beat TN 1999 in Fiesta Bowl
  • 2001 team played in Rose Bowl
  • First Rose Bowl since 1940
  • Removed in 2003

COACH CALLAHAN

  • Announced coach 41 days after
  • Won 2005 Alamo Bowl
  • Won Big 12 N Division in 2006
  • First two losing season
  • In more than 45 years

COACH PELINI

  • Inroduced as coach Dec. 2, 2007
  • Won Big 12 North in 2009
  • 10 win season in 2010
  • Moved to Big 10 in 2011
  • First trip to Big 10 champ. game in 2012
