About Her:

  • Marie Sklodowska Curie was born in 1867.
  • Her nationality is Polish.
  • She graduated The University of Paris at 15.
  • Worked as a governess to support her sister for a while.
  • She is also known as the First Lady of Science.

Her contributions:

  • She coined the name for radioactivity.
  • She also discovered the elements polonium and radium.
  • She found that the harmful properties of x-rays helped kill tumors.
  • She successfully isolated pure radium and determined their atomic weight.

Recognition

  • She won two Nobel prizes, and was the first person to do so. One for her discovery of radioactivity,
  • One for her discovery of radioactivity, and then another for discovering two elements. Marie was
  • the first woman to be awarded in the pantheon. There is an existing cancer care named in her
  • honor. After her husband's death she became professeur of general physics in the faculty of s
  • Sciences, and the first woman to be in this position. Pres. Hoover gave her 50k to get radium.
