American policy of providing economic and military aid to any country threatened by communism or totalitarian ideology/ Eastern Europe/ mainly helped Greece and Turkey

Guerrilla Warfare
type of fighting in which soldiers use swift hit-and-run attacks against the enemy

Chinese Civil War
war between communist Mao Zedong and nationalist Chaing Kai Shek/communists took over and forced the nationalists to retreat to Taiwan

Iron Curtain
political barrier that separated Eastern and Western Europe/ term became popular by Winston Churchill

Berlin Wall
wall separating East and West Berlin built by East Germany in 1961 to keep citizens from escaping to the West.

(DMZ) an area that both militaries are required to stay out of in order to create a buffer between nations/ in Vietnam, a five mile wide DMZ was established between the North and South along the 17th parallel.

the spread of nuclear weapons to new nations

the use of full scale nuclear weapons would effectively result in the destruction of both sides

Ngo Dinh Diem
American ally in South Vietnam from 1954 to 1963/ his repressive regime caused the Communist Viet Cong to thrive in the South and required increasing American military aid to stop a Communist takeover/ was killed in a coup in 1963.

Vietcong
group of Communist guerrillas in South Vietnam who worked with North Vietnam

Vietnamese leader/ supported by both communist China and the Soviet Union/ defeated both the French and the US to make Vietnam completely communist

Communist leader of China who led a revolution to defeat Nationalist Leader Chiang Kai Shek/ became leader of the People's Republic of China

Chiang Kai Shek
General and leader of Nationalist China after 1925/ succeeded Sun Yat-sen as head of the Guomindang and became a military dictator whose major goal was to crush the communist movement led by Mao Zedong/ ultimately failed and fled to Taiwan
