MAJOR CIVIL WAR BATTLES

Battle of Fort Sumter
April 12-14, 1861. Happened in Charleston, South Carolina. General P.G.T. Beauregard of the confederate states won the battle. This was considered the first battle of the civil war. http://www.civilwar.org/battlefields/fort-sumter.html

First Battle of Bull Run
On July 21, 1861, Union and Confederate armies clashed near Manassas Junction, Virginia, in the first major land battle of the American Civil War. It began when about 35,000 Union troops marched from the federal capital in Washington, D.C. to strike a Confederate force of 20,000 along a small river known as Bull Run. After fighting on the defensive for most of the day, the rebels rallied and were able to break the Union right flank, sending the Federals into a chaotic retreat towards Washington. The win shocked many people in the North, who realized the war would not be won as easily as they had hoped

Battle of Fort Henry
February 6, 1862. Fought at Stewart County and Henry County, Tennessee and Calloway County, Kentucky. The US Army was led by Ulysses S. Grant and Andrew H. Foote and the Confederates were led by Lloyd Tilghman. The US Army won this battle only suffering with 40 casualties and the Confederates suffered with 79. Battle of Fort Donelson
February 11-16, 1862. This battle was fought at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. The U.S. Army was led by Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and Flag-Officer A. H. Foote and the Confederates were led by Brig,. Gen. John B. Floyd, Brig. Gen. Gideon Pillow, and Brig. Gen. Simon B. Buckner. The U.S. Army ended up winning this battle. Batle of Shiloh
the battle of Shiloh was a major battle fought April 6-7,1862. The major generals of the battle were the unions major general Ulysses S. Grant. The confederates major generals were general Albert Sydney Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard. Battle of Antietam
September 17th, 1862. Also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg. The United States Army was led by Major General Geroge B. McClellan and the Confederates were led by General Robert E. Lee. Battle of Fredericksburg
fought December 11-15, 1862 at Fredericksburg, Virginia. The two generals were general Robert E. Lee of the confederate army and major general Ambrose Burnside. Battle of Chancellorsville
April 30- May 6, 1863. This battle was located in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. The United States Army was led by Major General Joseph Hooker and the Confederates were led by General Robert E. Lee and Major General Thomas J. Jackson. Siege of Vicksburg
May 18 – July 4, 1863. Was the final major military action in the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War.Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee crossed the Mississippi River and drove the Confederate Army of Vicksburg led by Gen. John C. Pemberton into the defensive lines surrounding the fortress city of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Battle of Gettysburg
was fought on July 1-3, 1863. This battle resulted in a union victory. The battle was fought between the union who was commanded by major general George Meade, and the confederates who were commanded by general Robert E. Lee. Battle of Chickamauga
September 18-20, 1863. This battle was located in Catoosa County and Walker County, Virginia. The U.S. Army was led by Major Generals William S. Rosecrans and George H. Thomas. The Confederates were led by General Braxton Bragg and Lt. General James Longstreet. The Confederates took the victory suffering with 18,454 casualties and the US Army suffered with 16,170. Battle of the Wilderness
May 5-7, 1864,was the first battle of Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Virginia Overland Campaign against Gen. Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.The outcome was inconclusive. Took place in a Area in Virginia and produced an important strategic event, where before Union commanders had withdrawn their armies after failing to achieve victory south of the Rappahannock River, Grant did not retreat. Instead, he attempted to outflank Lee by moving to the left, setting the stage for the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse.HistoryNet.com

May 8-21,1864. This was the second major battle in union general Ulysses S. Grants overland campaign. The major generals of the battle were grant himself and Robert E. Lee.
