DESCRIPTION

  • Freshwater fish found in North America
  • Life expectancy of 2-7 years
  • Rarely exceed 2 pounds
  • Silvery color, with green/brown shades on its back
  • Average size range from 6.7 to 20.9 in

BEHAVIOR

  • Often found schooling together
  • Feed on small minnows and insects
  • Found in large rivers, reservoirs, and lakes
  • Spawn in March through May
  • Fully mature in 2-3 years

SPAWNING

  • Crappie build nests in shallow, calm water near vegetation
  • Nests are often built in groups
  • Males guard nest until the eggs hatch and young leave
  • Females produce between 2,900 and 91,700 eggs
  • Eggs hatch within 3-5 days
