THE ABC'S OF SCIENCE

BY DREW PARKER

A
A is for atmosphere. The atmosphere helps block out harmful rays. The atmosphere also is where weather happens.

B
B is for bear. Bears are mammals. Mammals are war blooded animals, that produce milk for their babies, and have live birth.

C
C is for circuit. Circuits control where electricity runs.

D
D is for dependent variable. The dependent variable is the result of you manipulating somthing.

E
E is for electromagnet. Electromagnets are a piece of iron with wire spun around it. When electricity is transported through the wire, a magnetic field is created.

F
F is for fulcrum. A fulcrum is the pivot point on levers.

G
G is for generator.
Generators create energy by turning kinetic energy in to electrical energy.

H
H is for hygrometer.
Hygrometers measure the humidity in the atmosphere.

I
I is for independent variable.
The independent variable is the the thing you change in the experiment.

J
J is for jet stream.
The jet stream is an airway that moves weather patterns from the west to the east.

K
K is for Komodo dragon.
A Komodo dragon is a reptile. Reptiles are cold blooded, and reproduce with eggs.

L
L is for lever. Levers are a simple machine, that makes work easier.

M
M is for mitochondria. Mitochondria is the cell that turns food into energy.

N
N is for North Pole. The North Pole is where the magnetic field is the strongest, that is why compasses point north.

O
O is for ozone layer
The ozone layer is the layer of the atmosphere where most harmful rays are absorbed.

P
P is for pulley.
Pulleys help make lifting things easier.

Q
Q is for quantitative oberservation. A quantitative observation
is an observation that has to do with numbers.

R
R is for respiration.
Respiration in plants is the process of cells turning food into energy.

S
S is for South Pole.
The South Pole is the bottom part of a magnet, which is attracts the North Pole and repels another South Pole.

T
T is for thermometer.
A thermometer is a tool used to measure tempeture.

U
U is for uv rays. Uv rays are harmful rays produced by the sun.

V
V is for vacuole. A vacuole is a plant cell that stores food.

W
W is for warm front. Warm fronts generally bring thunderstorms and warm weather.

X
X is for xylem.
Xylem is part of the vascular system. The xylem transports water up to the leaves, from the roots.

Y
Y is for y-axis. The y axis is on a graph. The dependent variable is always on this side. The y axis is the vertical line.

Z
Z is for zebra.
Zebras are mammals. Mammals are vertebrae, mammals have live birth, and fur or hair.
