THE HEART

  • Causes abnormal heartbeats
  • Can affect the efficiency of the heart
  • Most cases are harmless
  • CAN occur in any heart whether it's
  • Healthy or diseased

CAUSES

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Shifting of the heart muscle
  • Heart attack injury
  • Heart surgery
  • Imbalances in the blood

STATS/PREVALENCE

  • More than 780,000 hospitalized
  • Annually in the U.S.
  • Middle aged adults with no history
  • Often have harmless arrhythmia
  • Age determines chances of arrhythmia

SYMPTOMS

  • Abnormal heartbeat, slow/fast heart rate
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting
  • Abrupt pounding of the heart, fluttering
  • Perspiration, abnormal loss of energy
  • Shortness of breath and chest pains

DIAGNOSING ARRHYTHMIA

  • Physical examinations
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Blood tests
  • Chest X-ray
  • Holter monitor

PROGNOSIS

  • Most cases are harmless
  • Don't require extensive care
  • Some cases are harmful
  • Only if combined with heart diseases
  • Endangers the patients life

PREVENTION

  • Cardiac ablation procedure
  • Artificial pacemaker
  • Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator
  • By pass surgery

INTERFERENCE WITH OTHER ORGANS

  • Can lower blood pressure
  • Decreases blood flow
  • Can prevent perfusion
  • Shutting down of vital organs

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Managing stress levels
  • Control/stop drinking/smoking/drugs
