WHAT?

  • American restaurant
  • Represents "Americans"

BACKGROUND

  • First diner was built in 1858
  • Didn't get popular until the 50s
  • Most popular in the 60s

BECOMING POPULAR

  • They only attracted men at first
  • In the 40s they tried to attract women
  • Added flowers, painted the cars, & added bathrooms
  • Also added stainless steel & big windows to attract people from the outside

DINER

  • Term diner comes from the dining cars in trains
  • Represented social equality because women were able to eat in dining cars
  • Not enough $ during Depression to build huge restaurants so they were small
  • Futuristic
  • Casual

WHO?

  • Walter Scott invented the first "diner"
  • Sold sandwiches and coffee out of a basket to night workers
  • He got popular so he sold them out of a wagon
  • These got very popular and later turned into dining cars
  • Inspired the idea of a diner

  • Cheap, filling meals
  • Good hangout spots for teens
  • Very cool at the time
  • Perfect date spot for teenagers
  • Good music (jukeboxes)

FOOD

  • Hamburgers
  • Fries
  • Milkshakes
  • Most popular dessert was ice cream

NOW

  • Still popular in California
  • Considered "old fashioned"
  • When people think of America they think of diners
