AIDs IN AFRICA

HISTORY

  • AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • It originated in non-human primates in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • It started in the late 19th and 20th century
  • Has become the leading cause of death world wide

SPREAD

  • From mother to child
  • Transfer blood
  • Injection drug use
  • Sexual contact

ORPHANS

  • 70,000 new orphans a year
  • 80% of all AIDS orphans still have one living parent
  • By 2010, estimated 20 million children will be orphaned
  • Family's primary wage earners are the one who usually die

ECONOMIC IMPACT

  • Three million people died from AIDS in 2001
  • 70% of the world's people living with HIV/AIDS are in Africa
  • AIDs will have long term economic consequences
  • Lower domestic productivity reduces exports, while imports of expensive goods may increase

ANTIRETROVIRALS

  • It is the main treatment but not a cure
  • It can stop a person from becoming ill for years
  • They have to take it everyday for the rest of their lives
  • It stops the virus from reproducing itself
