Mission Statement

The mission of the National History Museum of Los Angeles County is to inspire wonder, discovery, and responsibility for our natural and cultural worlds.

History

The land that the museum is on wasn't always used by the museum. From 1872 to 1910, the land was used as an agricultural fairground. William Miller Bowen, a teacher and an attorney, wanted to change this. The land was named Exposition Park and a new structure was placed on the renamed land. On November 6, 1913 the museum was opened. This was not the end of the museum's growth. Earthquake protection and a skylight on the rotunda was put in during 2009. After that more things were added. The Age of Animals and Dinosaur Hall were added later on. These will probably not be the last changes of the museum.

Butterfly of Peace

This butterfly is made from 240 gems. Alan Bronstein, the curator of the museum, and Harry Rodman made this masterpiece. It took them 12 years to complete it. This 167 carat butterfly has been in the museum since December 4th, 2013. It will stay there until January 6th, 2015.

Blue Moon Diamond

This is the blue moon diamond. It is a 12 carat masterpiece. This gem can also turn red when it is in ultraviolet light. This marvelous gem arrived at the museum on September 13, 2014. It will leave on January 6, 2015.

Age of Mammals

This is a huge exhibit that takes up a large part of the museum. It is a permanent exhibit. It consists of skeletons, taxidermy, hands-on activities, and many models of ecosystems and animals. Lastly, this exhibit is one of the museum's biggest attractions.

California History

This exhibit is another permanent piece of the museum. The title explains what the exhibit is. This exhibit is all about California's history. It consists of models of California's changes and Los Angeles' changes. It shows how the Native American and Mexican cultures influenced this state. Lastly, it shows the information that most people don't know about California.

Hours of Operation

The museum is open everyday except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Fourth of July, and New Year's. The museum is open from 9:30 am to 5 pm.

Tours

Tours are offered to museum visitors. During the tour, a museum worker guides you around the museum and talks about the pieces. This tour is offered in Spanish and English.

Workshops

The museum offers workshops for students. There are gardening and mask-making workshops. There are food workshops and more. These workshops can also be enjoyed by adults.

First Fridays

On the first Fridays of every month, bands perform at the museum. In 2015, the first performances will be on February 6th, March 6th, April 10th, May 1st, and June 5th.
