1st Fetter:
Satkaya-drsti
Belief in a fixed, unchanging self

I am what I am!

There's nothing to be done about it!

2nd Fetter:
Vicikitsa
Emotional inability to commit oneself

One self follows another, like waves breaking on the shore of one's state of mind

3rd Fetter:
Silavrata - paramarsa
Dependence on rites & ritual as ends in themselves

Wanting to get something from our practice which has nothing to do with its true purpose

Weaken the 4th & 5th Fetters

Once-Returner

4th Fetter:
Kama-raga
Desire for sense experience

The longing that would arise on being deprived of sensory experience is unimaginable

5th Fetter:
Vyapada
Anger or animosity

Discontent, irritation, frustration etc. constantly hover in the background of our experience

Break the 4th & 5th Fetters

Non-Returner (free from human rebirth)

An individual

  • Is prepared to change
  • Is willing to let go of fixed views
  • Can commit wholly - is integrated
  • Does not confuse means with ends

To be an individual you need

  • Objectivity, Clarity & Intelligence
  • Awareness that actions have consequences
  • Responsibility for your actions & consequences
  • Receptivity
