THE TREATY OF FORT LARAMIE
In 1860 both indians and miners were attracted to the northeast corner of the soon to be Wyoming territory for its natural resources.
A gold frenzy first took place in Montana territory, which soon drew miners north along the North Platte river for gold, and created the red cloud war
Jim bridges, John Bozeman and other miners went against what people said and created multiple trails through these territories and the Arapaho and Lakota Indian hunting grounds.
Through this trail volunteer troops attacked and massacred many peaceful Indian tribes. The tribes now angered banded together with their nearby nations ( the Oglala, Miniconjou, and Brulé bands of Lakota people, Yanktonai Dakota, and Arapaho Nation) and moves along the route to kill white people.
In attempt to protect the expedition of these miners the U.S.sent troops in order to subdue the aggressive indians, this only resulted in more angered Indians and more dead troops
The U.S. Finally decided to ask for a treaty between the Indians and miners, that would allow the miners to travel through peacefully, again angering the Indians and causing them to kill and burn many forts and people the U.S. made up the treaty of Fort Laramie
This treaty granted the land north of the platte river and ownership of the black hills to the Indians, it also forbid Indians to set forth on the powder River country, where all the gold was
A few years after, this treaty was broken when miners in search of gold crossed the reservation for gold and was massacred by the Indians, the treaty was revoked and the U.S. took the land back from the Indian tribes, Sioux
