PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Nanotechnology

Adrienne Saldanha & Alexis Nguyen

What is It?

  • "Molecular Manufacturing"
  • A molecule by molecule method to obtain desired configurations
  • Manipulation of individual atoms and molecules
  • Developed to create high performance products

Uses for Nanotechnology

  • Medicine
  • Fuel Cells
  • The Environment
  • Food

NAnomedicine

  • Construction of more advanced medical instruments and devices
  • Improve medical sensors for diseases and cancer
  • Bring surgical control to the molecular level

Nanomedicine Cont.

  • Nanoparticles: More efficient detection of Cancer Biomarkers
  • Polyethylene Glycol Nanoparticles: used for therapy and imaging
  • Fullerenes (Carbon based carriers): For drug delivery and photodynamics
  • Magnetic Iron Oxide to be used in nanoparticles for drug delivery

Fuel Cells

  • Fuel Cell: a cell producing an electric current from a chemical reaction
  • Fuel Cells have membranes where only hydrogen ions pass through
  • Nanotechnology: used to create more efficient membranes
  • Nanotechnology: also used to create longer lasting fuel cells
  • Scientists reducing amount of  platinum needed as a catalyst in fuel cells

The Environment

  • Nanotechnology for clean up of pollution & finding alternate energy sources
  • Silver Nanoclusters used as catalysts to reduce polluting byproducts
  • Silicon Nanowires to reduce costs and creates high efficiency solar cells
  • Carbon Nanotubes used in windmill blades for strength and lighter weight

Food

  • Nanomaterials: to improve taste and food safety
  • Silver Nanoparticles: embedded in plastic to kill bacteria more hygienic
  • Clay Nanocomposties: form barrier for plastics to keep out unwanted gasses
  • Carbon Nanotubes: capable of breakdown by enzymatic hydrolysis
  • Edible Nanolaminate Coating: coating for food dipped in various solutions

Inventions in the future

  • A Vitamin Storage System/Nanocapsules: the nutrients you need are delivered
  • Nanostructures to bend light and create invisibility
  • Emotion Control Devices: to control the behavior of psychopaths
  • Holographic Television using nanocomposites
  • "The Lifesaver Bottle": for improved purification

Nanotech to a smaller scale?

  • Picotechnology: Manipulation of matter at an even smaller scale
  • Manipulation of matter at the atomic level (around 2070)
  • Structure and properties of atoms altered by manipulation of energy states
