Federalism

  • The distribution of power in the government between the central authority and the constituent units.
  • Power is divided between central authority and constituent units.

Checks and balances

  • system that is used to keep the government from getting too powerful in one branch.
  • The legislative branch is maintained and “co-equal”.

Separation of powers

  • the state is divided into 3 branches : legislative, executive, judicial
  • divided into branches: legislative, executive, judiciary.

Popular sovereignty

  • the principle that the authority of a state and its government is created and sustained by the consent of its people, through their elected representatives
  • The government depends on the people.

Limited government

  • government outline where any more than minimal governmental intervention in personal liberties and the economy is not allowed by law
  • There is a limit to the government’s power.

Judicial review

  • the doctrine under which legislative & executive actions are subject to review by the judiciary
  • Judiciary reviews legislative and executive actions.
