1940s

Nuclear power was first developed in the 1940s. During the Second World War research initially focused on producing bombs by splitting atoms of uranium or plutonium.

1950s

In the 1950s attention turned to the peaceful purpose of nuclear fission, notably for power generation.

1980s

In 1980 there were two accidents at Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania, and a disaster at Chernobyl. People were terrified of nuclear power during this time period.

Civil Nuclear Power

Civil nuclear power can now boast over 15,500 reactor years of experience and supplies, almost 11.5% of global electricity needs, from reactors in 31 countries.

Contemporary Time
Today, the world produces as much electricity from nuclear energy as it did from all sources combined in 1960.
