WHAT EXACTLY WERE CONCENTRATION CAMPS?

  • Refers to a camp where people are confined in harsh conditions
  • First camps in Germany were est. after Hitler's appointment as Chancellor
  • Concentration camps were found all over Eastern Europe

  • Bergen-Belsen (Germany)
  • Fossenburg (Germany)
  • Sobibor (Poland)

AUSCHWITZ

  • First held Polish prisoners
  • Became the largest site for the murder of Jews in 1942
  • More than 1,100,000 men, women and children died there
  • Was a symbol of terror, genocide, and the Holocaust
  • Established in 1940 by Germans, largest death camp

AUSCHWITZ(CONTINUED)

  • Included three main camps, all prisoners were forced to work
  • Main camp located 37 miles west of Krakow
  • Established near Owiecim in an abandoned Polish army barracks
  • Dreadful living conditions
  • Overcrowding, diseases, shortage of water, starvation

AUSCHWITZ II

  • Also called Auschwitz-Birkenau
  • Largest total prisoner population
  • Included sections for women,men,gypsies,and Jewish families
  • During Summer-Autumn 1941, Zyklon B gas was created
  • Zyklon B was used in the gas chambers

AUSCHWITZ III

  • Also called Buna or Monowitz
  • Established in October 1942
  • Prisoners assigned to work at a synthetic rubber factory
  • Also had a Labor Education Camp for non-Jews that violated German laws
  • Forced labor camp
