Welcome back to school and welcome to our class!

Today, I'm going to do my best to introduce the culture of this class, myself as a teacher, and you to each other.

To get things started, I've written a poem. Some of you have heard it before; some of you will be hearing it for the first time. Either way, I want you to hear from me what I think this class will be about.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Happy first day!

"Mrs. Mutner liked to go over a few of her rules the first day of school."

I don’t teach English…
I teach life
So if you say you don’t like English,
I say, that’s alright.

Like, if you’re not down with vocab, or spelling,
my friend, put ‘em to the side,
Those little guys are just passengers
along for our ride.

Let’s take it back now: how did you learn not to lie?
Did you hear the one about that lonely boy who cried
Wolf one too many times
And then the real wolf came
ate him up
and he died?

Now that you’re older, what lessons now?
How do we live life, who teaches us how?

Well, I teach life, and by that, I mean…
Everything important in life that you need:

And succeed.

Recognize your own humility, your own avarice…that means greed.

Beauty, wonder, truth, all that good stuff

How to find
Snakes in the grass and...

Diamonds in the rough.

And avoid clichés

So people hear your voice coming through
We don’t want your adages
We want you!

But still, use allusions, show you’ve heard other voices

Like Whitman said, the play goes on
you will contribute verses…

Listen: I teach stories, lessons, power and thought
The stuff we all live through, like it or not

Actually, I don’t even teach, I’m a liar,
All that I do is talk and inspire.

Untitled Slide

And all that I know is that stories teach lessons

and when you say your piece, I want people to listen,

Don’t count this one out because of her spelling,
Her insight on life is remarkably telling
Don’t shelf this guy’s story cuz his grammar is poor,
He knows pain, laughter, beauty and so, so much more.

If you are alive, your view makes us richer,
Your piece of this puzzle helps us see the big picture.

And living is the act of playing your part,
Of being yourself, of speaking your heart.
Of seeing where you fit, taking a good long look,
And writing your verse down, in humanity’s book.

See, life is the stories we tell, nothing less,
And when you’re telling your story, I want your best

I teach the extraordinary power of words.
I teach how to listen

So when you say you don’t like English,
I say, that’s alright...

I teach life.
