Bipolar disorder is a condition in which a person has periods of depression and periods of being extremely happy or being irritable.

SCIENTIFIC NAME

  • *Manic depression*
  • Mania
  • Mood disorder

Causes
Starts between ages 15-25.
The exact cause is not known. It occurs most often in people with relatives who may have the disorder.

Things That Might Trigger an Episode

  • Childbirth
  • Antidepressants or steroids
  • Not being able to sleep/rest
  • Using drugs

Symptoms-manic phase
Easily distracted
Little need for sleep
Poor judgement
Unable to control temper
Lack of self control
Very involved in activities

Symptoms-Depression

  • Low mood/sadness
  • Not being able to concentrate/remember
  • Eating problems
  • Fatigue or loss of energy.
  • Felling worthless, hopeless or guilty.

SYMPTOMS CONT.

  • Not being satisfied.
  • Low to no self-esteem
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Over sleeping-not enough
  • Being distant to friends and family

Treatment
Main focus of treatment is to help reduce mood swings, enjoy life anywhere you are, keep you safe and happy.
