NITRATE KILLS!!!
NITRATE PROBLEMS
- Reduces oxygen levels in the water
- Which harms aquatic life
- To much nitrate can make people sick
- And is sometimes fatal
Nitrate can be good but in small amounts. Too much nitrate is unhealthy.
Causes: runoff from agricultural sources, urban runoff, waste water treatment plant runoff, air emissions.

IT CAN CAUSE
- Blue baby syndrome
- Prevents full flow of blood to lungs
If babies or pregnant women drink water with too much nitrate in it, it can cause problems for the baby like blue baby syndrome.
SOLUTIONS:
STATE NITRATE STANDARD (HOW MUCH NITRATE CAN BE IN THE WATER)
State nitrogen standards help show how much nitrate is too much and what water is safe to drink.

All of these have nitrogen in them and when they get into the river it increases the amount of nitrogen which can cause problems listed in the before slides.
WAYS TO GET IT OUT OF WATER...
- Ion exchange
- Distillation
- Reverse osmosis
All of these are ways you can get nitrogen out of the water but they are very difficult and don't always work.
WHAT YOU AND I CAN DO
- Keep a clean and healthy lawn
- Rake/sweep lawn and sidewalk
- Pick up after your pets
- Don't flush your pills
- Use triclosan free products
OTHER WAYS ARE...
- Don't liter (pick up your trash)
- Use reusable water bottles instead of plastic
- Turn off water when not using it (ex. Brushing teeth)
- Buy products with less packaging
