PRESENTATION OUTLINE
HISTORY
In December 1891, Dr. James Naismith who was a physical education teacher, was trying to keep his gym class active on a rainy day. He created a indoor game to keep his students occupied.
Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball, the first balls made specifically for basketball were brown. It was only in the late 1950s that Tony Hinkle introduced the orange ball so that it was easier to see. Dribbling was not part of the original game except for the "bounce pass" to teammates. Passing the ball was the main way to get ball movement, dribbling was eventually introduced.
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
There is no compulsory protective equipment. It is the players choice whether they want to wear shin-guards, gum shields etc.
~Shin-guards~
They protect the shin, just in case another player kicks or injures another players shin. If the shin guards weren't there, a players shins could get injured.
They are made of lots of different synthetic materials, it is also made of plastic, these are good materials because the plastic is hard and can prevent the impact on the shin and the synthetic materials are soft so it is as comfortable as possible.
~Gum Shield/Mouth Guard~
They protect the gums and/or teeth. If a player accidentally knocks another players teeth, they can be damaged or even knocked out. A gum shield or mouth guard protects the teeth and gums. If a gum shield/mouth guard wasn't there, teeth could be knocked out or damaged. More often than not, they will be made out of thermoplastic, this is a good material because it can soften the impact of the teeth. Also, the hits impact is spread across the gum shield/mouth guard.
~Basketball Boots~
They reduce friction between the court and the player. If a player comes to a sudden stop, the shoes will stop the player because of the amount of friction. If basketball boots weren't there, when a player comes to a sudden stop, they would slide along or loose their balance. They are often made out of leather, this is a good material because it is comfortable but also does it job of gripping and comforting the foot.
~Common Injuries~
Common injuries in basketball is rolling ankles, bruising and jarred fingers. Things to prevent this from happening are:
Rolling Ankles~ Taped ankles, ankle straps and ankle boots.
Bruising and Jarred Fingers~There is not really anything to prevent this from happening.
