Clarissa "Clara" Barton

  • Born on christmas of 1821
  • Died April 12, 1912
  • she was a pioneering nurse who was the founder of the American Red Cross

  • she worked as a hospital nurse during the american Civil War. As a teacher, she was also a patient clerk.
  • she worked as a humanitarian at the time when very few women worked outside the home.
  • she had a relationship with a man named John. J Elwell, but never married.

American Civil War:
Before Clara's Father died, Clara was able to talk to him about the war effort. her father convinced her that it was her duty as a christian to help the soldiers. After her fathers death, she gathered her medical supplies and became a ladies aid.

American Red Cross

  • after the war, she ran the office of missing soldiers at 437 1/2 seventh street, Northwest, Washington, D.C. in the Gallery Place neighborhood.

  • After a country wide tour where she spoke to people across the country about her experiences from 1865-1868, she was both mentally and physically exhausted. Under Doctors orders she had to go somewhere far away from her work.

  • she closed her office in 1868 and traveled to Europe in 1869; during her trip to Geneva, Switzerland, Barton was introduced to the Red Cross and Doctor Appia; who later would invite her to be a representative for the Red Cross and even help her find financial benefits for the start of American Red Cross.

  • When Barton returned to the United States, she inaugurated a movement to gain recognition for the International Committee of the Red Cross by the United States government. In 1873, she began work on this project. In 1778 she met worked with the President Rutherford B. Hayes, who expressed the opinion of most Americans at the time which was the U.S would never again face a calamity like the civil war. Barton finally succeeded during the administration.

HER DEATH

  • She continued to live in her Glen Echo, Maryland home which also served as the Red Cross Headquarters upon her arrival to the house in 1897. Barton published her auto biography in 1907 titled "The story of my Childhood." On April 12, 1912 at the age of 90, Barton died in her home. The cause of her death was double pneumonia.
