The reason there was barbwire was because on the farm ranchers and farmers had a lot of cattle for money and farming stuff. They had trouble with the cattle wondering off or running away. But cutting fences are a big problem and it became a law in 18884 for cutting fences.
Then made Joseph F. Glidden invited barbwire in 1873. But the farmers and ranchers didn't think it could hold large herds of cattle. Then John W. Gates a common sales man proved that barbwire could hold the cattle and was successful.
Soon Ranchers and Farmers bought barbwire and the open range was a thing the past.
