HOW IT WAS FOUNDED

  • Baptist was a movement that began in the early 17th century
  • Beliefs flourished in Holland & England
  • John Smyth led first congregation of 36 people
  • Thomas Helwys established the first Baptist church in England in 1612
  • Roger Williams took up religious responsibility of Massachusetts

HOW IT WAS FOUNDED

  • 1638 established first Baptist church in America in uncolonized Rhode Island
  • John Clarke, from England, didnt like the practice in Massachusetts
  • John founded a Baptist church in Newport, Rhode Island

BAPTIST BELIEFS

  • Baptism is full immersion
  • Religious freedom
  • Seperation of church and state
  • Salvation through grace and faith in Christ alone
