when i first heard about slavery i was kind of shocked because this is somthing that happens in movies and its hard to believe that this actually happened.
when i heard about the underground railroad i thought that this was a great thing that they were doing.
the underground railroad has nothing to do with a train, railroad,or anything underground.its actually a group of people who help escaped slaves get to the north.
The person who started the underground railroad was harriet tubman.
Life as a slave was horrible, they were pretty much treated like an animal, worked for nothing, barely got fed,and were constantly beaten. They ran away alot because they were tired of being treated this way. Slaves traveled on trains and boats(mostly)j dont think they traveled much but i know the only time they did was when they esaped.
Frederick Douglass, a former slave and eminent human rights leader in the abolition movement, was the first black citizen to hold a high U.S. government rank.
Frederick Douglass tried to escape from slavery twice before he succeeded. He was assisted in his final attempt by Anna Murray, a free black woman in Baltimore.
Harriet Tubman escaped slavery to become a leading abolitionist. She led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom along the route of the Underground Railroad.
Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery in 1849, fleeing to Philadelphia. Tubman decided to escape following a bout of illness and the death of her owner in 1849.
Nat Turner, born into slavery on October 2, 1800, on a Southampton County plantation, became a preacher who claimed he had been chosen by God to lead slaves from bondage. On August 21, 1831, he led a violent insurrection. He hid for six weeks but was eventually caught and later hanged. The incident ended the emancipation movement in that region and led to even harsher laws against slaves.
Established in the early 1800s and aided by people involved in the Abolitionist Movement, the underground railroad helped thousands of slaves escape bondage. By one estimate, 100,000 slaves escaped from bondage in the South between 1810 and 1850.
