ISO Sensitivity

International Standards Organaization

What it is

  • Rating system for film sensitivity
  • Lower number=lower sensitivity
  • Higher number = higher noise

How to change your ISO

Aperture

f-stop number

What it is

  • How big the hole is in the lens
  • referred to using f-stop numbers
  • larger number = smaller hole
  • Larger hole = shallower depth of field

How to change your aperture

Shutter Speed

In the blink of a lens

What it is

  • How fast the shutter opens/closes
  • faster shutter = less light
  • longer time = more likely blur

Metering

see the light shine

what it is

  • How your camera guesses the amount of light
  • Helps you gage exposure
  • Allows for exposure compensation

Metering Modes

  • Matrix
  • Partial/Center-weighted
  • Spot

Practical Time

How does the metering mode affect exposure?

Focal Length

As far as the lens can see

What it is

  • Angle of view
  • Image magnification

Lens Names

  • Extremely wide angle
  • Wide angle = 21- 35mm
  • Normal = 35 - 70mm
  • Medium telephoto = 70 - 135mm
  • Telephoto > 135mm

ISO, Shutter Speed & Aperture

Each component compensates for the other. Achieving balance is key.

Practical Time

How do the variables interact with each other?

Depth of Field

How low can you go?

Using different f values, we can dictate how far the camera focuses.

Rule of Thirds

No math involved. I promise.
