What is Biomass?

Biomass is the production of electricity, natural gas, and other fuels by means of plants and animals.

Biomass
Biomass can come in many forms. like ethanol, biodiesel, and even methane. These fuel sources are all cleaner and more efficient than fossil fuels

So what are fossil fuels?
Fossil fuels are nonrenewable natural fuels such as coal or gas, formed from the remains of living animals

Fossil fuels play a huge role in air pollution. A lot of oil spills that take place involve fossil fuels. Fossil fuels can create pollution to water and even damage landscape.

Fossil fuels contain carbon that was removed from the atmosphere millions of years ago. They emit large amounts of extra carbon dioxide when they are burned.

Everything about fossil fuels is harmful to the earth. By using the many types of biomass we can save our planet one plant at a time.

Vegetable oils

  • Vegetable Oil is a form of biomass
  • It can be used as fuel and converted into biodiesel
  • Vegetable Oil is the most common feedstock for biodiesel
  • Engines run better in cold weather when using Vegetable Oil
  • First diesel powered engine ran on peanut oil

Ethanol

  • Ethanol is an alcohol that can be used to power engines
  • Ethanol is the same substance found in alcoholic drinks
  • Biomass materials like corn and sugarcane are used
  • to make ethanol
  • Ethanol is less flammable than gasoline and more efficient

Biodiesel

  • Biodiesel is a form of diesel fuel
  • It is manufactured from vegetable oils
  • animal fats, and recycled restaurant greases
  • Biodiesel is biodegradable and safe
  •  It has Less pollutants than petroleum diesel

METHANE

  • Methane can be obtained from methanogens or anaerobic bacteria.
  • Animal waste is put into these digesters as well as the methanogens.
  • In the digesters there is zero oxygen which forces the bacteria to produce
  • Methane. This Methane is pumped to electrical plants where is is burned.
  • Methane can also be used in gas appliances such as stoves.

biomass is the right choice because...

  • It is a renewable source that is inexpensive
  • Environmentally friendlier than fossil fuels
  • Many different forms that can be used
  • An easy source that anyone can use
  • Does not harm the inside of Earth when used

Disadvantages

  • Biomass is a contributor of Formaldehyde
  • to Urban air
  • Ethanol that biomass produces can be
  • dangerous because it has a clear
  • flame that you cannot see
