NATIONAL YOUTH ADMINISTRATION (NYA)

DATE OF ESTABLISHMENT

  • The NYA was established on June 26, 1935.

PURPOSE

  • The NYA helped over 4.5 million young people find work, get vocational training and a better education.

WHO IT AFFECTS/BENEFITS

  • Provided work training based on U.S. citizenship and financial need for youth between ages 16-25
  • Offered courses of writing, reading, and arithmetics.

SUCCESSFUL OR UNSUCCESSFUL?

  • The NYA was successful because it operated two programs the Works Project Program and Student Aid Program.
  • To train unemployment, out-of-school-youth. To provide work-study training for high school, college, and graduate students.

IS IT STILL AROUND TODAY?

  • No, it closed down in 1934 due to the rising rate of youth unemployment.
