NOVARUPTA, ALASKA
The June 1912 eruption of Novarupta was the largest of the 20th century.
Novarupta is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
The eruption sent 3 cubic miles of magma and volcanic ash into the air.
It fell to cover an area of 3,000 sq miles in ash more than a foot deep.
The Katmai caldera was formed by the eruption.

EYJAFJALLAJÖKULL, ICELAND
"Island mountain glacier", it is one of the smaller ice caps of Iceland.
The eruption sent lava 100m into the air and tore a 1km-long fissure in the ice.
Icelandic airspace was closed, along with 20 European countries.
Before 2010, the last eruption was in 1821.

VOLCANIC AIR POLLUTION AND EFFECTS
Sulfurous volcanic emissions are called vog.
Vog and other gases from volcanoes can cause acid rainfall.
