HOW IS HE IS HE IMPORTANT TO MN'S HISTORY?
- He came here and established Pilgrim
- Baptist Church. (Which is still around
- today in St.Paul MN)
HERE IS PILGRIM BAPTIST CHURCH
HOW DID HE FIGHT AGAINST SLAVERY?
- He heard about the Emancipation Proclamation
- In 1863 and decided to go to MN with some of his
- Followers (the pilgrims is what they called themselves)
WHAT STRUGGLES DID HE FACE WHILE FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM AND AGAINST SLAVERY?
- He and his group had to get out of Missouri
- Some Minnesotans didn't like them there because
- They thought they might take over their jobs
- They also needed a place to worship so they held
- Services in member's homes.
HOW DID HE COME HERE?
- Was towed upriver by a steamboat.

- Some say they built a crude raft and got towed

- Some say they were helped out by union soldiers
