ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

APRIL 24, 1915

ESTIMATED 1.5 MILLION KILLED

  • Genocide occured in the Ottoman Empire
  • Genocide comitted by CUP/ Turkish Amry
  • Other indigenous and Christian ethnic groups targeted
  • One of the first modern genocides
  • Second most studied genocide after the Holocaust

COMMITTEE OF UNION AND PROGRESS

  • Begun as a liberal reform movement in the Ottoman Empire
  • Turned into a political party by Bahaeddin Sakir
  • Factions of the CUP began to view the Armenian people as a 5th collum
  • They felt that the Armenian people would betray the Ottoman Empire
  • Most of the members were court marshalled by the sultan Mehmed Vl

DEATHS

  • On 4/24/1915 300 male scholars were taken out of their homes
  • They were jailed shortly and then beaten and killed
  • Next the rest of the men were taken to the outskirts of town and killed
  • Turkish towns people would often join in the killings

WOMEN, CHILDREN, ELDERS

  • Women were told to grab few things
  • They were told that they were part of a relocation program to get out of the war zone
  • Really they were part of death marches to the Sahara Dessert
  • They had no food or water on the matches and many died of dehydration and starvation
  • They were also loaded on ships and the army would sink the ships

RECOGNIZING GENOCIDE

  • Only 23 countries have recognized the Armenian genocide as a genocide
  • They have marches to protest about it
  • The genocide offically ended in 1923, 5 years after the CUP had dissolved
