RAINFALL

  • Rainfall played an important role in affecting agricultural growth.
  • In Athens, the average rainfall per month was around 20 mm.
  • In Iraklion, the average rainfall per month was around 2 mm.
  • In Thessaloniki, the average rainfall per month was around 1.5 mm.

RAINFALL

  • Athens' rainfall was enough to sustain the city.
  • Iraklion and Thessaloniki's rainfall was not enough to sustain the cities.
  • Due to the lack of Rain, Iraklion and Thessaloniki had to trade for supplies

TRADING

  • Trading was a crucial aspect in Greece
  • Trading was aided and plagued by the trade routes chosen
  • If a trader traded by sea, the trader could carry twice the resources in twice the time.
  • If a trader traded by land, the journey would be more difficult and risky

Temperature

  • Temperature affected Greek way of living.
  • It would determine what crops could be grown at a certain time period
  • It could kill people if they aren't properly equipped with the right clothing
  • It could make traveling difficult because it can cause people to be slower while walking.

Agriculture

  • The Geography of Greece affected farming
  • There wasn't a lot of farmland because the land was mountainous
  • Most people spent their time farming because they needed as much food as possible
  • Because of the lack of farmland, Greece's population couldn't grow over a million people

Daily Life

  • Women had virtually no rights. Because of the mountains, it was dangerous for women to leave their homes
  • The women's job was to take care of the children
  • Men did basically all of the roles necessary for survival
  • Men in their free time would roam the prairie on their horse
  • Men were the people who fought other civilizations

Warfare

  • Many battles were fought by Greek men
  • Because of the mountainous region, archers were able to set up on mountains and get a tactical advantage
  • The rivers and lakes provided ways for the Greeks to use naval warfare, which consisted of sinking other boats
  • They also provided ways of attacking and retreating
  • For example, an army can attack on land in one direction and flank the army on boat in the other direction.

HUNTING

  • Geography affected they way hunting was done
  • Hunters would place traps hidden from sights
  • Hunters would camouflage themselves to stay undetected
  • Hunters would use elevation to see all their prey around them

Mountains

  • The mountains had many important uses for the Greeks
  • Protection
  • Tactical advantage
  • Natural barrier between other nations
