HISTORY

  • Sodium is used in salt
  • Salt has been used for thousands of years
  • The actual metal was not isolated until 1807
  • The symbol is derived from the Latin word Natrium.
  • It was also used to mummify things.

PROPERTIES

  • It is a soft grey metal
  • Sodium burns yellow
  • Reacts violently with water
  • Has one valence electron
  • Highly reactive

USES

  • Sodium is used in table salt (NaCl)
  • It is also used in fire works to make them yellow
  • NaCl is an ionic bond between sodium and chlorine.

SOURCES

  • It is found in common table salt
  • But is mostly produced in the labs
  • Through super heating sodium carbonate
  • Or through chemical reactions
