PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Fact 1
Polio is a viral disease which may affect the spinal cord causing muscle weakness and paralysis. The polio virus enters the body through the mouth, usually from hands that are contaminated .Polio is more common in infants and young children and occurs under conditions of poor hygiene. Paralysis is very dangerous for the elderly.
Fact 2
Polio usually causes the same mild, flu-like signs and symptoms typical of other viral illnesses.
Signs and symptoms, which generally last one to ten days, include:
Fever,Sore throat,Headache,Vomiting,Fatigue!Back pain or stiffness,Neck pain or stiffness pain or stiffness in the arms or legs, muscle weakness or tenderness
Meningitis
Fact 3
Polio is spread when the waste of an infected person is introduced into the mouth of another person through contaminated water or food (fecal-oral transmission). Oral-oral transmission by way of an infected person's saliva may account for some cases, in other words kissing or sharing food or drinks may contribute to contracting polio
Fact 4
Poliovirus is very contagious. The virus lives in an infected person’s throat and intestines. It spreads through contact with the saliva and waste of an infected person. You can get infected with polio if you have waste on your hands and you touch your mouth. Also, if you put objects, like toys, that have waste on them into your mouth. If a soon to be mother is infected the baby has a chance of contracting polio.
Fact 5
Polio cases have decreased by over 99% since 1988, from an
estimated 350 000 cases in/ before 1988 to 406 reported cases in 2013. The reduction is the result of the global effort to eradicate the disease.
Today only 3-5 countries recognize polio as a pandemic.
Fact 6
Children do get polio, in fact they are more at risk to polio than many adults. Children should get a dose of vaccine for polio ever 2 mounths in there first year and then when they are 4-6.( sites were not able to give me information about how many children get polio)
Fact 7
There are no cures for polio in " developing countries " but in the U.S and most of the European countries and the Asian, and african/ South American countries there is a vaccine first used in 1955-1956 in America which acts a cure for polio, with the help of the vaccine polio's "playing ground" has been limited to 5 countries, India is one of the resent countries that have recently rid its population of polio.
Fact 8
The cure for polio is a well known vaccine called IPV which has been in use seance 1955, the vaccine it was not surtain to cure you, but now-a days it has been able to eradicate polio over the years and is now in a state of perfection since the original vaccine took effect in the late 1950's
