OCULAR ALBINISM

OCULAR ALBINISM SYMPTOMS

  • Light blue eyes
  • Bad eyesight
  • Involuntary back and forth movement of eyes
  • Lazy eye
  • Sensitivity to bright lights

Most affected: males (1 in 60,000)
Cause: mutation in GPR143 gene, the gene that decides the pigment of eyes

OCULAR ALBINISM

  • Genetic defect: result of mutation

OCULAR ALBINISM

  • When most likely diagnosed: birth or early years
  • How most commonly diagnosed: based on eye pigment or tested at birth

OCULAR ALBINISM

  • Treatment: visual aids and environmental changes
  • Surgery is provided, but not common
