PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PERSONAL STYLIST

BY SOPHIA PEREZ & MAIA JACKSON

Career Plan

  • There aren't many successful Christian designers (and you wouldn't know by the clothes they make)
  • most celebrities don't dress themselves, they hire a stylist
  • Sophia plans to attend FIT-Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, New York
  • Maia plans to attend Parsons the New School for Design, New York, New York
  • Ideally, we'd also intern somewhere, for experience and to make connections and build relationships

Pros

  • you get to buy from big brand-name designers
  • you can work for celebrities, and design their "look"
  • you have the opportunity to make a person well-known for what they wear
  • you get to meet a lot of people, especially celebrities
  • you get the fun of shopping, but with other people's money

CONS

  • only those in the tight inner fashion circle know who you are
  • you cant put your name on a certain look you create
  • its very challenging to get into this business
  • you're usually behind the scenes

How to become a stylist

  • you don't need a college degree to be a personal stylist
  • fashion, design, and fashion merchandising degrees look good on a resume
  • you need to be really open-minded when it comes to trying new clothes
  • you can't be shy when it comes to new trends: you need to experiment!

How do you get heard about?

  • word about you can be spread by word-of-mouth
  • your client may just be well-known
  • your client could talk about you on an interview
  • or you actually get credit for what you do

Salary

THE AVERAGE SALARY FOR A STYLIST IS $17,000-$1 MILLION PER YEAR

colour PALETTE

  • making a colour palette doesn't mean you're stuck with it forever
  • you can create a colour palette for different events or use a new one daily
  • For collections, designers have many different looks, but they have a central theme
  • we chose to use many colours and shades that are natural and earthy
  • (This is more for fashion design than styling)

ACCESSORIES

  • being a stylist means you also have to choose accessories
  • it doesn't always mean makeup; there will probably be a makeup artist
  • accessories can consist of: bags, hats, belts, shoes, and jewelry

I felt drawn to this career, not only because you can work with clothes and shopping, but there is a story: My uncle, who currently lives in Ohio, used to work for Prada, in Beverly Hills on Rodeo Drive, he himself dressed Elton John, Steve Martin, Pierce Brosnan (who played James Bond prior to Daniel Craig), and Lenny Kravitz a.k.a. Cinna, from the Hunger Games, who, in the movie, dresses Jennifer Lawrence!👏

I first wanted to be a designer when I was 8 or 9, when my mom bought me a Project Runway design kit, complete with colored pencils and a sketchbook with predawn bodies, so all I had to do was draw the clothes. Once I started sketching, I never looked back. Even after the pages of the kit ran out, I either bought more with the silhouettes, or made my own once I was more comfortable drawing people.

THANKS FOR WATCHING!
