WHEN YOU THINK OF EARTHQUAKES, WHAT COMES TO MIND?
I imagine a lot of destruction because of the ground shaking.
I picture buildings in pieces and everything destroyed.
I think of people scared when it is happening.
I think of people being upset because of the results of the earthquake.

WHAT IS AN EARTHQUAKE?
An earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground caused by sudden movement of rock.

WHERE DO EARTHQUAKES OCCUR?
Earthquakes occur along plate edges and along faults.
They also occur along continental plates.

WHY DO EARTHQUAKES OCCUR?
Earthquakes occur when rocks break along a fault and the release of energy is what causes the ground to shake.

WHAT IS THE DEVASTATION LIKE?
Earthquakes ruin entire cities in minutes.
They put many lives in danger.
After earthquakes occur tsunamis may often occur latter.
Earthquakes disrupt the countries aid operations which makes it difficult to help people.

HOW OFTEN DO EARTHQUAKES OCCUR?
Earthquakes with a magnitude 2 or smaller occur several hundred times a day.
Earthquakes with a magnitude 7 or higher occur about once a month.
Earthquakes with a magnitude 8 and higher occur about once a year.

WHAT WAS THE LARGEST RECORDED EARTHQUAKE?
The Great Chilean Earthquake or the 1960 Valdivia Earthquake was the largest earthquake.
It occurred on May 22, 1960 near Valdivia, in Southern Chile.
It had a magnitued of 9.5.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN TO PROTECT PEOPLE FROM EARTHQUAKES?
If you are indoors during an earthquake you drop, cover, and hold on.
You should get under a desk, table, or bench and hold on to the legs.
Do not run outside durin an earthquake because materials from buldings may fall on you.
If you happen to be outside when it occurs, stay outside and move away from anything that could fall on you.
During an earthquake you should have a flashlight, disaster supplies kit, and evacuation supplies kit.

HOW ARE EARTHQUAKES MEASURED?
Earthquakes are measured using the Richter Scale.
It is the amplitude of the seismic waves.
The moment magnitude of an earthquake is a measure of the amount of energy released.

HOW DO EARTHQUAKES AFFECT THE ECONOMY?
They affect the economy because it costs a lot of momey to fix the destruction.
They affect peoples lives and familes.
They can destroy businesses and jobs so many people cannot sell their products.
They destroy homes and hospitals so there is little help to the people hurt.
Earthquakes are a horrible natural disaster.
