BACKGROUND INFO.

  • Gay-Lussacs was born December 6th, 1778 in saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, France.
  • Died May 9th, 1850
  • Field of science was chemistry
  • Oldest out of five children

EARLY YEARS

  • Home schooled
  • French Revolution
  • Sent to boarding school after his father was arrested
  • Sent to Paris to prepare for École Polytechnic

EDUCATION

  • Got accepted to École Polytechnic in Paris
  • Initially studied mathematics and engineering
  • Three years later he was transferred to the École des Ponts et Chaussées
  • Berthollet, his professor, took Gay-Lussac under his wing as his student

CAREER

  • Gay-Lussac began his own research in the winter of 1801.
  • First only studied properties of gases, vapor-tensions, hygrometry, capillarity, etc
  • French chemist Joseph-Louis helped Gay-Lussac published the "Law of Combining Volumes of Gases."

DISCOVERIES

  • Chlorine was discovered in 1808
  • Boron was discovered in 1808
  • Iodine was discovered in 1811
  • Gay-Lussac's gas law was published in 1809

GAY-LUSSAC'S GAS LAW

  • P1/T1 =P2/T2
  • Gives the relationship between pressure and temperature when volume and amount are held constant.
  • If the temperature of a container is increased, the pressure increases.
