NEW YORK AND PENNSYLVANIA

NEW YORK FOUNDING

  • Originally founded by the Dutch
  • Was called "New Amsterdam"
  • Duke of York took it for England
  • Renamed the colony "New York"

ECONOMY AND DIVERSITY

  • Industries of fur, lumber, shipping
  • Fertile soil attracted many settlers
  • They had lots of immigrants
  • Middle colonies were most diverse

POLITICS

  • Aristocratic
  • Royal elected officials gave power to families
  • Influential landowning families had lots of power

RELIGION

  • Between Puritan New England and Catholic Maryland
  • Mix of the two religions
  • Lots of religious freedom
  • Both the founders, Dutch and English, were Protestant
  • Protestantism was the main religion

PENNSYLVANIA FOUNDING

  • Founded by William Penn
  • He received a royal charter for a debt owed to his father
  • He welcomed forward-looking and skilled people
  • Wanted religious freedom from the Puritans
  • Founded in 1681

ECONOMY AND DIVERSITY

  • Had many German and Scottish immigrants
  • Carpenters, masons, shoemakers, etc.
  • Many colonists were religious misfits
  • The Quakers exported grain and other foods
  • Strong economy with 2,500 settlers in a short time

GOVERNMENT

  • Based on religious freedom for the Quakers
  • They were peaceful with local Indians
  • Had perfect democracy, religious freedom, and justice
  • Had absence of military and oaths
  • Philadelphia became the most important city in the colonies

RELIGION

  • Founded for the religious freedom of the Quakers
  • No dominate religion
  • Gave religious freedom for everyone
  • Quakers, Catholics, Lutherans, Jews and others

FUN FACTS

  • NY became a state on July 28, 1788
  • PN became a state on December 12, 1787
  • "Penn" in PN comes from the founder William Penn
  • "Slyvania" in PN comes from the Latin word meaning "woodland"
