ADVENT

THE CANDLES

• We use the candles to count down to Jesus's birth

ADVENT

• Advent means "coming"
• Advent is when Jesus Christ comes to save the people
• This is the time that we wait for our savior

THE SAVIOR

• Isaiah is a prophet who talks about the savior Jesus
• Jesus is the savior, the massiah, the son of God
• He will have authority and will be wise and prudent
• He will be as a warrior and defender of the people, like God himself
• His kingdom will be one with peace

ISAIAH

• Isaiah described Emmanuel this way:
• "For a child is born to us, a son is given us;
• Upon his shoulder dominion rests.
• They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, and Prince of Peace"

EMMANUEL

• Means "with us is God"
• Christians believe that the Emmanuel is Jesus Christ

JOHN THE BAPTIST

• The writers from the four gospels describe John with words from Isaiah
• "A voice of one crying out in the desert: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths"
• John fulfills the words of the prophet Isaiah
• John's greatest joy is proclaiming the that jesus is the messiah
• "Behold, the lamb of God, whontakes away the sins of the world"

CHURCH

• We pray in the words of john the baptist every time before we get the Eucharist
• Jesus Christ is no longer a hope, he is the emmanuel, the messiah
• He is always with us

THE JESSE TREE

• A symbolic way of presenting God's love and actions in people's lives
• It is a way to connect the season of advent to God's faithfulness to his people over time
• Traditionally a different symbolic ornament is placed on the Jesse Tree for each of the days of advent

THE JESSE TREE

• The name comes from the scripure:
• "But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse,
• And from his roots a bud shall blossom"
