John played guitar, piano, harmonica and sang lead. Paul played bass guitar, piano and sang lead. George played lead guitar and sang back-up harmony. Ringo played drums and sang back-up harmony. Both Ringo and George sang a couple of lead songs but Paul and John sang and wrote almost all the songs.
John Lennon formed a group called The Quarrymen, in 1957. Paul McCartney joined as a guitarist in July. George Harrison was invited to join as lead guitarist. Stu Sutcliffe joined on bass in January. Sutcliffe suggested changing the band name to "The Beetles" as a tribute to Buddy Holly and The Crickets, and they became "The Beatals" for the first few months of the year. The band finally became "The Beatles" in August. The lack of a permanent drummer was a problem. Before the end of August they hired Pete Best, but then Pete Best was fired and Richard Starky aka Ringo Starr was hired.
In 1960,they became big in Hamburg,Germany In 1961,The Beatles became the most popular band in Liverpool and its surrounding areas. In 1963,they became popular in England and other parts of Europe(notably Sweden) In 1964,Once they broke through in the US,they became international superstars.
Even thought the Beatles had many popular hits, these were a couple: 1. Hey Jude 2. Yesterday 3. A Day In The Life 4. She Loves You 5. I Want To Hold Your Hand 6. Let It Be 7. Strawberry Fields Forever 8. Help! 9. A Hard Day's Night 10. In My Life
There will never be a band as big as The Beatles. They came when America was weak (JFK had just been assasinated) and gained popularity. They were revolutionary and way ahead of their times. They opened the door to so many bands and different types of music. In my opinion when they disbanded in 1970 they left you wanting more so their popularity never died. They started as a cute pop band and than evolved into so much more. And today's bands of the world have the Beatles as their idols since they were so successful. Their music had meaning and many people could and still can relate to it. I LOVE THE BEATLES!
