MT. ST. HELENS LAST ERUPTED IN MAY 18, 1980

  • Mt. St. Helens erupted ash and caused a pyroclastic flow
  • A quarter of the eruption was fresh lava in the form of ash
  • Ash went 80,000 ft. into the air

  • It was 9,677 ft. before it erupted
  • Today it is about 8,365 ft.

  • Shipping was stopped on the Columbia River and some vessels were stranded
  • In eastern Washington 5,000 motorists were stranded
  • 2 people died from heart attacks by shoveling the ash
