PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Plate Tectonics

THE THEORY THAT EARTH'S OUTER SHELL IS DIVIDED INTO SEVERAL PLATES.

Cause of movement 1:
Convection Currents

THE TRANSFER OF HEAT BY THE MASS MOVEMENT OF HEATED PARTICLES INTO AN AREA OF COOLER TEMPERATURE.

Cause of movement 2:
Subduction

THE PROCESS IN WHICH EARTH'S CRUST COLLIDES RESULTING IN ONE PLATE IS DRAWN INTO THE EARTHS MANTLE

Cause of movement 3:
Ridge push

A proposed mechanism for plate motion in plate tectonics.

Divergent Plate boundary

A tectonic boundary where two plates are moving away from each other and new crust is forming from magma that rises to the Earth's surface between the two plates.

Ocean Landform Resulting from Divergent Plate boundary

Mid ocean ridge

example: The mid Atlantic Ridge

Landform resulting from Divergent plate boundary on land

Volcano

Convergent plate Boundary

An actively deforming region where two (or more) tectonic plates or fragments of the lithosphere move toward one another and collide.

Resulting landform from ocean vs continent

Deep ocean trench

Example:Sunda Trench

Resulting landform from ocean vs ocean

Island arcs

Example: Mariana islands

Resulting landform from continent vs continent

Mountain ranges

Example: Himalayas

Subduction zone

THE PROCESS IN WHICH EARTH'S CRUST COLLIDES RESULTING IN ONE PLATE IS DRAWN INTO THE EARTHS MANTLE

Deep ocean trench

a long narrow steep-sided depression in the earth's oceanic crust, usually lying above a subduction zone

An example of deep ocean trench is:

Mariana Trench

Transform plate Boundary

a strike-slip fault that offsets a mid-ocean ridge in opposing directions on either side of an axis of seafloor spreading.

Resulting event from transform boundary :

A transform fault

An example of transform boundary is:

North Anatolian fault
