  • known diabetic, hypertensive, w/liver cirrhosis
  • Single, No children
  • Mexican American
  • Retired English Teacher
  • Dx: Major Depressive Disorder, recurrent w/out psychosis

Major Depression

  • over 2 weeks of intense sadness;disruption of previous functioning & five other symptoms
  • Reoccurs in episodes throughout ones life

Onset/Etiology

  • average onset: mid twenties
  • 15-25% females; 8-15% for males
  • may be related to other medical illnesses/mental health conditions
  • 2-4 times likely to develop - 1st degree biological relatives

Signs/Symptoms

  • Dejected Mood
  • Reduction in Gratification
  • Avoidance, Escapist, Withdrawal
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sleep Disturbance
