The Whole Is Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts

ANNA CHON

Dharavi

  • India's largest slum
  • 1 million people squeezed in an area that's 1/2 the size of NY Central Park
  • There's too little water and unreliable power

Jobs, Industries, etc.

  • Dharavi's biggest industry is recycling
  • Rag pickers work 10 hrs a day but only earn $5
  • Rag pickers put themselves in danger for the sake of food and for
  • their child's education
  • 85% of the residents in Dharavi have jobs

Education

  • Even though money is hard to earn, parents save up for their
  • child's education so they can be successful and not live in the slum
  • Children drop out of school because parents cannot afford it
  • Education is important in Dharavi

"SLUM DOGS"

  • I feel like the people in Dharavi deserve to be treated with more
  • respect because they go through so much stuff. They don't
  • deserve to be called "slum dogs" when they're working so hard
  • for education, food, and shelter. It makes me sad to see that people
  • would actually call other "dogs."
