2.
DEFINITION
Geo=earth
Thermal=heat
Energy=the strength required for sustainable activity
Energy/power extracted from beneath the earth

3.
BACKGROUND
Traditonally used for bathing and heating purposes by the American Paleo Indians.
In 1921, John D. Grant bulit the first geothermal power plant in the U.S.
Used geothermal energy for water harvesting at Eburra and Suswa
In the 1960s, the first US large scale plant was constructed
Has been used for over 10,000 years
4.
CURRENT USES
Heat pumps
Electricity generation
Direct applications

5.
ENERGY
Geothermal energy is heat from the earth
Below the earths crust, there is a layer of hot and molten rock called magma.
Heat is continually produced there
Heat pumps can tap into this resource to heat and cool buildings
Heat pump systems consist of heat pump, air delivery system, heat exchanger

6.
ENERGY CONT.
The amount of heat within about 33,000 feet of Earths surface
Contains 50,000 times more energy than all oil and natural gas resources
It is almost an unlimited amount of heat generated by earths core
Available resources are primarily in Western States/Alaska, Hawaii
Areas with highest underground temps are regions w/ active young volcanos

3 TYPES OF THE ENERGY
Dry steam: takes steam out of ground and uses it to drive turbine
Flash: pulls deep, high-pressure hot water into cooler, low-pressure water
(Steam that results from this process is used to drive turbine)
Binary: hot water is passed by a secondary fluid to turn to vapor
(This drives the turbine)

8.
BENEFITS
It is a renewable resoruce
It is good for 15 years or more
Not a lot of money
It has no pollution
It has job creations

9.
DRAWBACKS
It is not widely used, there is unavailability if equitment
Not enough skilled man power
Not easily transported
High installation costs
Only suited to particular regions

Global Reactions
10.
FUTURE
Move the earth to clearner and more sustainable energy
Keep producing more electricity
Technologys will improve
More energy will be tapped from the earth
Renewable source, so it will never run out

QUESTIONS
Is this source renewable or nonrenewable?
What is one current use of geothermal energy?
Where is the energy found?
How many types of this energy are there?
What benefits are there?
