DUST BOWL

  • Farmers had used the topsoil in the Great Plains to grow wheat
  • This caused the soil to be eroded severely by wind
  • Result- giant dust storms that ruined farm equipment and made people sick
  • Many people moved to California and become migrant workers
  • This became a symbol of the Great Depression

HARD TIMES FOR MEXICAN AND AFRICAN AMERICANS

  • Many African Americans were sharecropping and fell into debt
  • They were killed by whites looking to find work
  • They traveled north, but all jobs were already taken
  • Mexican Americans ran farms in the west
  • The influx of whites led to warrantless raids and immigration laws

PHOTOGRAPHY AND LITERATURE

  • Artists were deeply affected, and often times used their talent to depict life
  • The visual artists were hired by the government to show problems
  • They also used this to make life better in the depression with art
  • Photojournalism showed the normal life in the Great Depression
  • Many novels were written to get away from the hard life during this time

POPULAR CULTURE

  • Many people flocked to the movies seeking escape from real life
  • Radio programs could be heard all over due to the widespread use of radios
  • People enjoyed music by performing lively upbeat dances
  • These were all means to find an escape from the hard times
  • Many of the stars were viewed as heroes

AMERICAN POLITICS CHANGES

  • African Americans spoke out for changes
  • Hoover did little to help them, so they ended up switching to Democrats
  • Communism was starting to be an idea for Americans
  • Communism was on the rise all over the world
  • People saw brutality of Stalin and thought communism was bad
