TYPES OF CHILD ABUSE:

  • Physical Abuse
  • Emotional Abuse
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Neglect
  • Family Abuse

DEFINE PHYSICAL ABUSE

  • Defined as the use of physical force that causes bodily harm
  • Physical abuse includes striking, hitting, beating, pushing
  • kicking, slapping, burning, pinching, whipping etc.
  • Children develop traumatic stress, anxiety, depression
  • Is the 2nd most common form of child maltreatment

PENALTY: PHYSICAL ABUSE

  • Section 215: Duty of Persons To Provide Necessaries
  • It is unlawful to fail to provide the neccessaries for a child under 16
  • Necessaries that must be provided: food, shelter,clothing
  • Care, love, support, supervision, control, showing moral guid.
  • Maximum Penalty: 2 Years Summary and/or indictable

PHYSICAL ABUSE: WEAPONS

  • Section 267: Assault with a weapon or bodily harm
  • Prohibits the carrying, use of or the threat to use a weapon for
  • the purpose of assault. Prohibits bodily harm as defined by any hurt or injury
  • that interfeeres with health comfort
  • Maximum Penalty: 10 Years

DEFINITION OF CHILD PSYCH. ABUSE

  • Behaviour of guardians dismantling child's state of mind
  • This behaviour includes actions such as: rejecting,
  • Isolating, exploiting/corrupting, terrorizing, and
  • Verbal assaulting which involves shaming/belittling
  • This happens because the guardian is stressed or evil

PENALTY: EMOTIONAL ABUSE

  • Its in the section 172: Corrupting Children
  • The morals of a child to be endangered by adultery
  • Sexual immortality and habitual drunkenness or something
  • other forms of vice, rendering the home an unfit place for a child
  • Maximum Penalty: 2 Years

CHILD MOLESTATION: SEXUAL ABUSE

  • Form of abuse in which an adult exploits a child
  • Forms of sexual abuse includes: pressuring,
  • Indecent exposure, sexual contact, or using
  • The child to produce child pornography
  • Can occur in homes, schools, and churches

PENALTY OF CHILD MOLESTATION

  • Section 151-153 of the CCC
  • An adult who overtly sexually touches the child
  • In any way or to force the the child to touch
  • Maximum punishment for summary offence is 2 years
  • Maximum punishment for indictable offence: 10 years

DEFINITION OF CHILD NEGLECT

  • The failure to care for the child properly
  • Parent(s) will lose custody of child if they don't:
  • Provide food, shelter, clothing, care, support,
  • Adequate supervision, and moral guidance
  • Deemed unfit if you cannot prove most of these points

FAMILY VIOLENCE

  • When 2 or more family members fight/argue
  • Which in worse scenario cases leads to domestic violence
  • Children who witness this ona daily basis are vulnerable
  • Child witnessing family/domestic violence is at risk of:
  • Aggressive language and behaviour, anxiety/depression

CASEY ANTHONY: SUMMARY

  • Born in Ohio, March 16, 1986
  • Known infamously after disappearance of her child
  • As the case unfolded, many assured she was guilty
  • But the jury thought differently and acquitted her of:
  • 1st degree murder, child abuse, manslaughter of child

FACTS OF THE CASE

  • Casey gives birth to Caylee at age 19
  • June 8/05 she reports Caylee's disappearance
  • In Orange County, FLA. June 27/08 Casey
  • Abandons her Pontiac Sunfire in a parking lot
  • Which is then towed 3 days later

FACTS CONTINUED

  • July 15/08 Cindy Anthony reports Casey to the police
  • For suspicion of stealing their car and money ALSO
  • Reporting that Casey's car was found and smelt like remains
  • Next day Casey is arrested for suspicion of child neglect
  • July 17, cadaver dog picks up scent of remains in her car

MORE FACTS

  • Aug.5th Casey is formally charged of child neglect
  • She is sent to jail but released on $500,000 bail Aug.21
  • Sheriff's samples of the air in the car shows that it
  • Once held the remains of a decomposing body
  • Casey is arrested for:check forgery, petty theft

SOME MORE FACTS

  • A Florida grand jury indicts Casey on capital murder
  • Casey pleads not guilty to murder charges, but theft
  • Her child neglect charges are dropped
  • Orange-Osceola state attorney says no death penalty
  • But later seeks death penalty, when remains found in woods

  • The prosecutors then announce they seek death penalty
  • Casey pleads guilty of 13 cases of check fraud
  • Captial murder trial of Casey Anthony starts in Orlando
  • Defense attorney Jose Baez states that Casey's father
  • Began molesting Casey at the age of 8

  • Baez stated Caylee drowned in Anthony family pool
  • On June 16, 2008, that George&Casey covered up the death
  • Casey does not testify
  • Both the defense and prosecution rest and jury deliberates
  • 7 women and 5 men jury deliberate for 10 hours and 40 mins

  • Not guilty of 1st degree murder
  • Not guilty of child abuse& mansalughter
  • Guilty of 4 counts of obstructing the law
  • She served 4 years in jail for 4 counts of lying
  • Fined $1,000 for each count
