• John Adams convinced the council to allow Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence

• elected to the Virginia House of Delegates
• in 1779 he was elected governor of Virginia
• he was reelected in 1780

• elected in 1783 to the Congress of the Confederation
• was sent to France to be a minister for trade

• was in France for the start of the French Revolution
• let his house be used for important political meetings
• he wrote his letters in code because they opened his mail

Presidency

• there was a tie between him and Aaron Burr
• Thomas Jefferson was elected by the House of Representatives
• there were few problems that he inherited in the presidency
