PRESENTATION OUTLINE

BEAR IN THERE

By Shel Silverstein

THE POEM'S PURPOSE

  • Silverstein's purpose is to entertain the readers.
  • Appeals to children.
  • Through abstract reasoning, can be seen as a Cold War reference.

IMAGERY #1

  • "He's nibbling the noodles... he's licking the ice."
  • Creates a visual for the minds of readers.
  • Appeals to the sense of sight.

IMAGERY #1 PURPOSE

  • Playful, light image; abstractly, it references to the Soviet's demoralization of the U.S. and its small, abundant attacks on capitalism.

IMAGERY #2

  • "With his seat in the meat and his face in the fish."
  • Setting a scene, appealing to sight. (First detailed image)

IMAGERY #2 PURPOSE

  • The silly image created of a seat of meat and a polar bear's head in fish provides a humorous appeal and entertains children.

IMAGERY #3

  • "He lets out a roar if you open the door..."
  • Appeals to sense of sound.

IMAGERY #3 PURPOSE

  • Through abstract reasoning, the polar bear can be seen as the U.S., containing itself in the fridge of democracy, away from the forces of communism.

IMAGERY #4

  • "And his big hairy paws in the buttery dish."
  • The adjectives big, hairy, and buttery help visualize the bear and the dish.

IMAGERY #4 PURPOSE

  • The delicate buttery dish in contrast to big, hairy paws shows how Silverstein plays on image.
  • The big paws can represent the paws of communism and the delicate dish is the U.S.
