Eight Major Themes Of AP Biology: 1. Science as a process 2. Evolution (EV) 3. Energy Transfer (ET) 4. Continuity & Change (C&C) 5. Relationship of Structure to Function 6. Regulation 7. Interdependence in nature 8. Science, technology & society

AP Biology Themes

The 8 Themes by the College Board

1. Science as a process

Science is a way of knowing.

It can involve a discovery process using

inductive reasoning, or it can be a process of hypothetical testing.

2. Evolution

Evolution is the biological change of organisms that occur over time

It is driven by the process of natural selection.

EVOLUTION ACCOUNTS FOR THE GREAT DIVERSITY OF LIFE.

3. Energy Transfer

Energy is the capacity to do work.

All living organisms are active (living) because of their abilities to

LINK ENERGY REACTIONS TO THE BIOCHEMICAL REACTIONS THAT TAKE PLACE WITHIN CELLS.

4. Continuity and change

This is one of the more challenging themes...

All species tend to maintain themselves from generation to generation using the same genetic code. However, there are genetic mechanisms that lead to change over time, or evolution.

Basically it says that living things have mechanisms to maintain continuity (sameness) within genetic codes and yet they also are subject to changing genetic codes. As much as living things strive to be the same, they become different over time.

5. Relationship of structure to function

Form follows function, and function follows from

The structural levels from molecules to organisms

ensure successful functioning in all living organisms and living systems.

6. Regulation

Everything is in a state of dynamic balance

Everything from cells to organisms to ecosystems is in a state of dynamic balance that must be controlled by positive or negative feedback mechanisms. (maintaining homeostasis)

7. Interdependence in Nature

Living things rarely exist in isolation.

Organisms are open systems that interact continuously with their environments. Organisms exchange materials & energy with their environment. (Cycling of nutrients, Flow of energy, Interactions)

8. Science, Technology, and Society

Science & technology must work together within the framework of society.

Scientific research often leads to technological advances

that can have positive and negative impacts upon society as a whole.

Consequences ƒ Ethics ƒ Education

Also science & technology are interrelated
